Steve coached five-time Olympic Medalist and two-time World Champion Shannon Miller and 1993 Junior National Champion Jennie Thompson as well as other national team members. Miller is the most decorated U.S. gymnast, winning more World and Olympic medals than any other gymnast in history.

Nunno was named Coach of the Year in 1992 and was one of the personal coaches at the 1992 Olympic Games. He was also a coach at the 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1995 World Championships competitions and head coach at the 1994 Goodwill Games and the 1995 Pan Am Games.

Nunno was a former National Collegiate All-Around performer at the University of Massachusetts. There he was captain of the team for two years and assistant coach through graduate school. Nunno graduated with a bachelors degree in Business Administration and a Master's Degree in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts.

After he finished graduate school Nunno owned his first gymnastics school in the Boston area for three years. In 1983, he moved to Texas to coach with Bela Karolyi as an elite coach. He then moved to Norman, Oklahoma to assist coaching the women's team at the University of Oklahoma and helped them win two Big Eight titles. In the summer of 1985 he established the Dynamo Team Program. The program started with 11 students and had three locations in Oklahoma with over 1,600 students enrolled when he sold it to become head coach of the Sooner's University of Oklahoma team.
